The BBC announced on Wednesday that it would be cutting up to 2,000 jobs, which is nearly 10% of its workforce, due to “significant financial pressures,” marking the largest wave of layoffs within the public broadcaster in 15 years.

The media giant, facing declining revenues and recent destabilization from the resignation of its director-general, aims to save £500 million in its total annual costs of £5 billion over the next two years. This information was shared with employees in a memo sent by interim BBC director Rhodri Talfan Davies, who acknowledged the challenging nature of these changes.

The British group had previously indicated in February its intention to reduce costs by 10%, without specifying the impact on jobs, which was only revealed to staff during a meeting Wednesday with no further details on affected employees.

“We anticipate an overall decrease of 1,800 to 2,000 jobs,” stated the document signed by Davies, attributing the need for action to “significant financial pressures,” including high production costs, pressure on license fees and commercial revenues, and a volatile global economy.

The head of the audiovisual press union, Philippa Childs, expressed concern over the scale of the cuts, highlighting the potential negative impact on employees and the BBC’s ability to fulfill its public service mission.

This announcement comes just a month before the arrival of the new BBC director-general, Matt Brittin, an ex-Google executive, who will take on the leadership of the British public broadcaster and its approximately 21,500 employees in a challenging period for the renowned media entity.
