The 66th International Military Pilgrimage brings together more than 18,000 participants from 37 countries to Lourdes. Between concerts, sports challenges, and spiritual moments, the marial city experiences a weekend of unity and fraternity like no other. Here are some highlights not to be missed for this PMI weekend.

Since Thursday evening, soldiers from around the world have “invaded” the marial city. This year, there are more than 18,000 participants (an increasing number) representing 37 countries, taking part in the 66th International Military Pilgrimage (PMI) until Sunday, May 24. Described as the second largest military event in France after the July 14 parade, the PMI is undoubtedly one of the most important and beautiful pilgrimages in Lourdes. It is also one of the most festive, with hopes of having enough beer in the bars of Lourdes due to the expected heat this weekend.

The PMI, a unique atmosphere

Unique in its kind, the PMI is a living testimony of international fraternity. Seeing soldiers from once opposing nations praying together and walking side by side is a strong sign of reconciliation and unity. The atmosphere at this pilgrimage is truly remarkable every year. For the people of Lourdes, just walking the streets during the PMI is a unique experience. Various military delegations from around the world can be seen, each with their uniforms, and there are even music parades to witness.

The International Military Music Festival

The International Military Music Festival, always popular among the people of Lourdes, is an integral part of the PMI. The festival will take place this Saturday afternoon at various points in the city and near the Sanctuary. Notable performances include bands from Germany, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Ivory Coast, and Croatia. There will also be special concerts by the French Navy, Swiss, Italian, and German music bands.

The International Challenge for Wounded and Able-bodied

Starting at 2 pm on Saturday, the Sanctuary meadow will host the International Challenge for Wounded and Able-bodied. Twenty-five teams from different nationalities, each composed of about ten runners pushing a wheelchair with a wounded person, will compete joyfully. The challenge involves a one-hour relay race interspersed with sports and intellectual workshops such as blowpipe shooting, laser rifle shooting, boccia, log sawing, and quizzes. This international event combines teamwork and solidarity to change perspectives on the wounded in the military.

There will also be a parachute jumping demonstration at the Sanctuary meadow at the same time.

The Unmissable Torchlight Procession

Whether believers or not, the torchlight procession is certainly one of the most moving moments to experience in Lourdes. This procession, part of the 66th PMI, will take place on Saturday, May 23 at 9 pm at the esplanade of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. It is a significant moment of the pilgrimage, along with the opening ceremony on Friday evening and the international mass on Sunday at 9:30 am at the Basilica of Saint Pius X.
