Trump’s two-day visit to China: Key meetings and trade talks
Donald Trump begins a two-day journey in China that marks the first visit of a U.S. president to the country in over a decade. This highly anticipated diplomatic visit highlights efforts to ease trade relations between Washington and Beijing, strained by U.S. trade policies and geopolitical tensions surrounding Taiwan and the Middle East.
The American president is set to engage in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his stay. A group of around fifteen prominent American executives, including Jensen Huang of Nvidia, Elon Musk of Tesla, and Tim Cook of Apple, are also part of the delegation.
Washington aims to finalize various trade agreements, such as increasing Chinese purchases of American agricultural products and aircraft. Meanwhile, Beijing holds strategic advantages like control over rare-earth exports and strong diplomatic ties with Tehran.
Amidst discussions on extending their tariff truce, Trump and Jinping are expected to address arms sales to Taiwan and other contentious issues. The heightened tension prior to the summit is evident in Beijing’s security measures and the public’s anticipation of the outcome of the talks.
Both countries have expressed a desire for lasting peace despite their commercial and geopolitical rivalries. Trump’s personal relationship with Jinping is seen as a stabilizing factor in preventing conflicts, notably related to Taiwan.
While Trump’s visit will be closely monitored by Taiwan and other Asian allies for signs of shifting U.S. support, China’s growing confidence on the world stage poses challenges amid economic uncertainties and domestic issues.
