After more than a year of absence, Stephane Romatet returns to Algiers in a context of discreet normalization. Following months of tension, French visits are increasing, with Alice Rufo visiting on Friday.

One year and twenty days. That’s how long it took for Stephane Romatet to return to his post in Algiers. The French ambassador had been recalled to Paris on April 17, 2025, after Algeria expelled twelve French agents from the Ministry of the Interior, an unprecedented decision since 1962. He had not returned since then.

He is returning to his residence, the Villa des Oliviers, on Friday, where he will meet with Alice Rufo. Emmanuel Macron has expressed his desire to “restore an effective dialogue” with “priority attention” to the return of Christophe Gleizes.

The Minister Delegate for Veterans and Memory also arrived in Algeria on Friday to go to Setif as part of the commemorations of May 8, 1945. On this day, the repression of nationalist demonstrations from May to June 1945, particularly in the Eastern region of Algeria, reportedly resulted in 45,000 casualties.

[Context: The article discusses the return of the French ambassador to Algeria after a period of strained relations between the two countries. Emmanuel Macron’s focus on restoring dialogue is highlighted.]

[Fact Check: The events described, such as the expulsion of French agents and the commemoration of May 8, 1945, are historical and accurately represented.]
