While Mexico and Spain are trying to restore diplomatic relations, the visit of a conservative Spanish political leader to Mexico is causing a stir in the country.

Since May 3, the president of the Madrid region, Isabel Díaz Ayuso (Popular Party, right-wing), has been receiving criticism from some of the Mexican public after attending an event glorifying the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés (1485-1547) on Monday, May 4, as reported by El País América.

The mayor of the historic center of Mexico (Cuauhtémoc), Alessandra Rojo de la Vega (National Action Party, right-wing), also participated in this initiative. This event was initially supposed to take place in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico, but was canceled by the archdiocese of the capital to avoid any “instrumentalization.”

“Involvement”

Following this, the ruling party, Morena (left-wing), strongly condemned this ten-day visit by the Madrid political leader, stating that her mere presence on Mexican soil was seen as an attempt of “interference by the extreme right in Spain” as well as a “direct threat to the country’s sovereignty.” According to the statement shared by the information platform, Isabel Díaz Ayuso’s arrival in Mexico is seen as part of a trend.
