As Mexico is engulfed in a heated controversy following the release of a damning report on forced disappearances by the United Nations (UN) on April 2, the disappearance and subsequent death of a young Mexican woman in the capital revives old wounds and stirs strong emotions.

This young woman was Edith Guadalupe Valdés, 21 years old. According to the timeline of events widely reported by Mexican media, including Milenio, she reportedly left her home in the Iztapalapa district, in the east of Mexico City, on Wednesday, April 15, to go to a property in the neighboring Benito Juárez district, where, according to her family, she was scheduled to attend a job interview.

Her disappearance was reported to authorities on April 16, at 1 a.m. Her parents then staged a protest to demand an acceleration of the search efforts after twenty-four hours without any news. On Friday, April 17, the young woman’s body was finally found in the basement of the building, with multiple stab wounds to the chest. According to another report by Milenio, the building’s security guard, Juan Jesús N., 21 years old, is suspected of being the perpetrator of the femicide and has been arrested by authorities.
