French President Emmanuel Macron has accused the pro-Iranian Shiite group Hezbollah of killing a French soldier, Sergeant-Chef Florian Montorio, during an ambush with peacekeepers in Lebanon. Macron clarified that the soldier was not targeted because of his French nationality but because he was carrying out a mission to protect civilians. The soldiers were part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and were working on demining operations to prevent civilian casualties. The attack resulted in the death of Montorio and injuries to three other soldiers. Lebanese authorities have condemned the attack and pledged to apprehend the perpetrators.
