France, small in size but large in expertise, remains one of the few countries capable of designing and producing complex industrial systems – from aerospace to railways, automobiles, energy, and life sciences.
“France can design a civil aircraft or a military aircraft with all its components. Where other countries are missing an element – radar, engine – we have integrated it,” says Damien Lasou, General Director of France at Expleo, a global player in engineering, technology, and consulting with over 17,000 employees in 29 countries, including over 5,000 in France.
On a global scale, this integrated capacity has become the exception rather than the norm. The French industry is among the few ecosystems capable of mastering the entire chain, from design to production, despite tightening development cycles under pressure from international competition.
This uniqueness is strategically important as the manufacturing sector still contributes to nearly 15% of the EU’s GDP, with significant effects on employment, innovation, and exports. The challenge now is to preserve and strengthen this expertise as the industrial environment transforms rapidly.
Innovation and agility are the new parameters of competitiveness. Development cycles are shortening, and industrial needs are evolving. Technological breakthroughs like electric vehicles, collaborative drones, and smart energy networks require a rethinking of design methods.
“Some foreign actors start from a blank page, with no factories to convert, no historical platforms to maintain. Their advantage is the ability to innovate on methods and design twice as fast,” explains Damien Lasou.
Standardization remains a structural challenge in engineering. Each engineer has their own habits, tools, and ways of documenting and verifying designs, leading to a lack of standardization more apparent in engineering than in production.
To stay competitive, companies must find a delicate balance: sharing best practices without erasing the richness of local expertise. Artificial intelligence plays a structural role in this transformation, moving from theory to practical application throughout the project value chain to accelerate speeds and enhance performance.
