Jessika Varner, business manager and community engagement coordinator at the Horizon Science Academy in Lorain, shared her journey of working in the school system since her early 20s. She started at the Concept Schools location in Cleveland, a nonprofit charter management organization managing high-quality charters in the Midwest with over 40 schools in six states.
Varner reflected on her role as a secretary handling attendance records in Cleveland before moving to Lorain, where she now works at the Horizon Science Academy. She expressed the dynamic nature of her work and the upcoming 10th graduating class event at the Lorain Palace Theatre in May.
Having joined the Horizon Science Academy in 2008, Varner emphasized the continuous growth and improvement, including the addition of new classrooms and bleachers in the gymnasium. The school now boasts 850 students, a significant increase from its beginnings with fewer than 50 students.
In addition to her administrative responsibilities, Varner is involved in media inquiries, event scheduling, and coordinating school activities. She also mentioned interesting encounters, like being mistaken for a co-worker by younger students.
