A wake-up to get back on track. Victor Wembanyama scored 33 points as the San Antonio Spurs easily defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder (103-82) on Sunday, May 24, leveling the Western NBA Conference Finals at two wins each. The 22-year-old Frenchman played only 31 minutes to rest for what promises to be a long series, making 11 out of 22 shots, including 3 out of 7 three-pointers.
“Wemby” also grabbed 8 rebounds, provided 5 assists, and blocked 3 shots in a one-sided game for the Spurs, who aim for their first NBA Finals appearance since their last title in 2014.
“It was the first time we were behind in this series. We just reacted. There’s nothing extraordinary about it. It wasn’t magic. We simply did what we had to do,” said the Frenchman, attributing the Spurs’ dominance to watching “a lot of videos, practically non-stop, in the last 24 to 48 hours.”
“The series is far from over,” he added. “We still need six wins before we can rest.” The fifth game of this best-of-seven series will take place on Tuesday, May 26, in Oklahoma City, before returning to San Antonio for Game 6 on Thursday, May 28.
Before the game, Victor Wembanyama was named for the first time in his career in the NBA’s All-League Team, falling one vote short of joining Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic among the unanimously named players.
