Montpellier easily eliminated Narbonne yesterday at the Parc des Sports et de l’Amitié in the Occitanie Cup quarter-finals with a score of 0-3.
There was no miracle on Sunday at the Sports Park in Narbonne. For this Occitanie Cup showdown, the FU Narbonne, currently 8th in their Regional 1 championship, hosted the undisputed leader of the group, Montpellier Atlas Paillade. Although the Audois entered the match with great heart and generosity, the technical and collective superiority of the Hérault team quickly dashed local hopes. A logical defeat against an opponent dominating this season.
The chilling realism of Atlas Paillade
Nevertheless, it was the Narbonne players who ignited the first spark. From the 6th minute, local striker Oymak stood out, but his attempt did not hit the target. The Montpellier response was quick: two minutes later, the visitors counterattacked, but the shot sailed over Jurgen Giraud’s goal. After this early alert, the game balanced out and territorial dominance shifted in favor of the visitors.
The breakthrough finally came with a set piece in the 28th minute. Following a free-kick obtained by the Narbonne defense, the Hérault number 11 Berriss unleashed a brilliant left-footed strike that ended up in the top corner. Unstoppable. Energized by this opening goal, Montpellier added another goal immediately. Following a beautifully executed corner, the visiting number 7 beat Giraud with a precise low shot. At halftime, the lead was 2-0.
A controlled second half
Coming back from halftime, Narbonne tried to react and put all their efforts into the battle. Beautiful sequences of play were seen on both sides, but Montpellier’s overall control remained resolute. Any hopes of a comeback vanished in the 53rd minute. After a collective play, the Hérault captain Touil further extended the lead to 3-0.
The score could have increased in the 70th minute when a new goal was scored by Atlas Paillade, only to be rightly disallowed for offside.
The end of the match provided some opportunities for both teams, but without posing a real threat. Narbonne bows out of the competition against a superior opponent.
