Despite Victor Wembanyama’s 21 points, 17 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 blocks, defending champions Oklahoma City managed to beat San Antonio 122-113 to tie the Western Conference finals at 1-1, ahead of the next two games in Texas.
After their home defeat in a double-overtime Game 1, Oklahoma City had no choice but to win Game 2 in front of their 18,203 fans at the Paycom Center, to avoid putting themselves in a difficult position in the Western Conference finals. And the Thunder, the reigning champions, delivered. OKC defeated San Antonio 122-113 to level the series at 1-1, guaranteeing at least five games in the series. The game once again lived up to expectations, with even the Spurs (still without De’Aron Fox) leading for most of the first quarter by no more than five points. Oklahoma City tied the game at 31-31 at the end of the quarter and never trailed afterwards.
Gilgeous-Alexander shines like an MVP: Despite another injury to Jalen Williams, the Thunder took control in the second quarter, winning 31-20, and the Spurs could not regain the lead. They briefly tied the game in the middle of the third quarter, before falling behind by ten points. Dylan Harper’s injury to the leg, who was pivotal in Game 1, may have played a part in their struggles. The Texans narrowed the gap to just two points with nine minutes left (99-97), but OKC responded with an 11-0 run and secured the win. MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who struggled in Game 1, bounced back with 30 points in 38 minutes (12/24 shooting, 6/6 free throws) and 9 assists. Alex Caruso (17pts) and Isaiah Hartenstein (10pts, 13rebs) played crucial supporting roles.
Wembanyama shines again: After his impressive performance on Monday, Victor Wembanyama did not shine as brightly, but still put up an excellent performance with 21 points (8/16 shooting including 3/7 from 3-point range), 17 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 blocks (but also 4 turnovers). Devin Vassell scored 22 points and Stephon Castle added 25 (but also had 9 turnovers), but it was not enough for the Texans. Both teams will now head to San Antonio for Games 3 and 4 on Friday and Sunday. Regardless, they will face Oklahoma City in Game 5 on Tuesday.
