In a match without stakes this Sunday pitting FC Nantes, already relegated, against Toulouse, the situation escalated in the stands. Within the first ten minutes, Canaris supporters invaded the pitch and set off smoke bombs, forcing the match to be interrupted. “The match has been definitively abandoned on the decision of the prefect for security reasons,” said Stéphanie Frappart, the match referee.
Nantes coach Vahid Halilhodžić, in his final match of his career, expressed his displeasure towards those responsible for the invasion. The supporters, some wearing hoods, seemingly wanted to stage a shock action to protest against the sports policy of the FC Nantes executives, particularly against owner Waldemar Kita. “What is happening today makes me very very sad,” said coach Vahid on Ligue 1+.
After a few seconds of chaos, the Nantes supporters returned to their stand, which was then secured by numerous riot police officers. A crisis unit was formed with members of the LFP and the authorities to decide on the outcome of the match. The definitive abandonment of the match was decided.
