They needed to win and hope La Roche-sur-Yon would stumble against Locmine to move up to League 3. The Girondins de Bordeaux failed in their quest after drawing with Avranches (3-3) on Saturday, May 16, and will not finish first in Pool A of National 2. The team led by former French international Rio Mavuba were caught up in the scoreline after leading 3-1. Even if they had maintained the advantage at the final whistle, promotion would not have been secured as La Roche-sur-Yon won (2-0) at the same time.
While they did not achieve a sporting promotion to the new L3, a professional division that replaces the National, there remains a slim chance of promotion for Girondins through administrative means. If several National clubs face financial difficulties or refuse to turn professional, Bordeaux could hope to reach the third division, two years after their relegation from Ligue 1 to the fourth division following a financial crisis.
