Football – The Greens come out on top after a nail-biting penalty shootout. Saint-Etienne earned the right to compete in the play-offs to return to Ligue 1. At home, the Greens failed to make a difference against Rodez in regulation time (0-0), so everything was decided in a fateful shootout. Thanks to Brice Maubleu, who came on in additional time and made 4 saves, and Mickael Nadal, the last effective shooter, ASSE secured the right (7 penalties to 6) to challenge the 16th-placed team in Ligue 1 (Nice, Auxerre or Le Havre).
Cycling – Vingegaard makes his mark. We had not really seen him yet in this Giro 2026. Determined to win the only Grand Tour missing from his record, Jonas Vingegaard made a nice move on Friday during the first mountain stage. The Dane did not crush the competition but he nevertheless claimed the victory in the 5th stage of the Tour of Italy at the summit of Blockhaus. The winner of the Tour de France 2022 and 2023 and the Tour of Spain in 2025 is 2nd in the general classification, 3’17 behind Afonso Eulalio, 15th in the stage.
Tennis – Ruud awaits his opponent in the final in Rome. The exact match-up for the Rome Masters 1000 final is not yet known. Casper Ruud, a clear winner over Luciano Darderi (6-1, 6-1), a match marked by a long rain delay, must wait until Saturday to know his opponent. The other semi-final between Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev was also interrupted due to rain and eventually postponed to later in the evening. Tied at one set each, the world number 1 was leading 4-2 in the 3rd set.
Rugby – Biarritz stays in Pro D2. One of the most famous French clubs remains in Pro D2. Biarritz had contested the deduction of 2 firm points by the French Rugby Federation’s appeals commission (for “miscounting and/or fraudulent accounting and circumvented financing” in the transfers of Thomas Sauveterre and Adrian Motoc in 2022) and it won its case before the CNOSF, which proposed that the sanction be accompanied by a suspended sentence. Beating Carcassonne (41-15) on the final day, BO finished 10th in the evening with a 5-point lead over Mont-de-Marsan (15th).
Basketball – Basket Landes gets revenge. Basket Landes is still alive. Defeated last week in Bourges in the Boulangere WonderLigue final, the Landes team got its revenge at home on Friday evening. Under pressure, the titleholder won the return match (59-54) and will have a decider at home on Sunday on Mont-de-Marsan’s court.
