The Olympique Lyonnais has its accounts in deep red, and it’s no mystery. Is this enough for them to be deprived of European competition by UEFA? From the side of Marseille, we’re not saying no.
Loué by the DNCG for its reactivity despite economic problems exacerbated by John Textor’s management, Olympique Lyonnais shows worrying accounts, but a more reassuring trend for the future. But for the moment, it’s not this week’s financial news in France that occupies the Lyonnais. Indeed, the Telegraph surprised everyone by announcing that OL could be ejected from the Champions League for failing to fulfill its commitments to UEFA.
Context:
– Olympique Lyonnais faces financial challenges despite showing a more stable future outlook. – There are concerns that OL may be excluded from the Champions League due to alleged breaches of UEFA commitments.
Fact Check:
– The Telegraph’s report on OL’s potential exclusion from the Champions League has stirred discussions.
OL is not afraid of UEFA sanction
This news surprised the OL side, where they believe all obligations have been met. This impression was confirmed by Le Progrès on Thursday, as the regional newspaper assured that it was possibly John Textor behind all these speculations, in order to sow doubt in Lyon and prove that the new leaders are not more competent than him.
In any case, a little further south, they may benefit from OL’s exclusion to secure a place in the Champions League if UEFA decides to take strong action. La Provence took hold of the matter, and even though the local newspaper acknowledges that the chances of Lyon being expelled by UEFA are slim, doubt seems to be allowed.
“Despite this very real threat, the exclusion of a club by UEFA is very rare. The TV rights crisis in France should also serve as a defense for the Lyonnais… But you never know,” La Provence points out in an evocatively titled article: “A competitor of the Olympians could be excluded from European competitions?”. This is currently the only way for Marseille to regain the Champions League, as the fourth place is no longer achievable before the final match against Rennes.
