An amendment adopted by the Commission on Cultural Affairs and Education working on the bill to reform professional sports aims to require the broadcasting of one clear match per weekend of Ligue 1. Before the measure can take effect, it must be voted on by the National Assembly.

Surprising but nothing is set in stone. The Commission on Cultural Affairs and Education is making progress on its work regarding the bill, adopted by the Senate, relating to the organization, management, and financing of professional sports. During this work in the commission, the deputies passed an amendment aiming to require the broadcasting of one clear match per weekend for Ligue 1.

“The increasing number of broadcasters for various sports competitions, and thus the increase in paid subscriptions, greatly distances spectators from sports events, and encourages piracy,” explain the deputies who introduced this amendment.

Participate in the “exposure of national football”

And they add: “To allow access to these professional competitions to as many people as possible, it would be appropriate to provide, for each commercialization of visual exploitation rights, a lot for the clear broadcasting of one match per week. The clear broadcasting of a Ligue 1 match per weekend would undoubtedly contribute to the exposure of national football. This proposal stems from the report of the information mission on the audiovisual broadcasting rights of sports events, led by Deputy Cédric Roussel in 2021.”

An article in this bill should then include an obligation to have a lot during specific calls for tenders specifically designed for clear broadcasting. However, nothing is definite yet. This amendment was adopted in the commission but still needs to pass the scrutiny of the plenary session. The lobbying efforts of television channels with deputies could be intense in the coming weeks.
