Montpellier Wins Ninth French Championship Title

Thanks to a victory in three sets at home against Poitiers, following their win in the first match, Montpellier secured their ninth French championship title. During the Marmara SpikeLigue playoffs, Montpellier stood out after defeating AS Cannes in the quarter-finals and Arago de Sète in the semi-finals, only dropping two sets. In the finals, Montpellier dominated Poitiers, securing a straightforward win. A week after their success in Poitiers in the first match (18-25, 22-25, 17-25), Montpellier had to finish strong in front of their home crowd at Palais des Sports Chaban-Delmas for the second set. They started the match aggressively, quickly taking a three-point lead. Despite Poitiers’ efforts, Montpellier took control early on and never looked back.

Montpellier took the lead immediately

Although Poitiers fought hard, Montpellier surged ahead towards the end of the first set, needing only one set point to take the lead. As seen throughout the match, Poitiers started well but couldn’t maintain their momentum. With five consecutive points, led by Nicolas Le Goff (12 points), Montpellier took the lead and continued to dominate. With a comfortable seven-point lead, Montpellier managed to secure the win, despite needing two set points and a remarkable play by Tomas Lopez Pascual (10 points). As they inched closer to victory, Stade Poitevin had to give it their all.

Poitiers struggled to find a solution

However, they couldn’t turn the tide, never leading in the third set except for the first point won through an ace by Tom Picard (4 points). The lead fluctuated between one and three points, with Poitiers managing to level the score twice. However, when it was time to push for the win, Montpellier responded effectively. With just one match point, confirmed after a Poitiers challenge, Montpellier clinched their ninth French championship title (25-15, 25-17, 25-20) without the need for a tiebreaker. Four years after their last victory, Montpellier once again reigns supreme in French volleyball and aims to maintain their position at the top despite increasing competition.
