After over a year since its inauguration in June 2025, the Roquevaire skatepark has not lost its shine. Built on the principle of DIY (do it yourself), the “GreenRock Skatepark” is the result of a project led by the MYPY Skateboard association.
In just four years, the association was able to self-finance up to 150,000 euros thanks to the support of many donors who provided the cement and other necessary materials for the construction.
Located in the hills of Lascours, the place brings joy to skateboarding enthusiasts. Since its opening, the site has been open to everyone and reserved only for skateboarding. According to Yuri Robinovtiz, the president of the association in charge of the construction, the story is just beginning in Roquevaire: “We have a lease until 2037 with the town hall. There are still two sections to build, including a zone for beginners”.
The first learning stages, in collaboration with the Friche Belle de Mai skateboard school, have started. Although currently only young people from Roquevaire are attending, the extension of the tramway from Aubagne should improve the accessibility of the skatepark in the future, greatly enhancing its visibility and possibly paving the way for regular classes throughout the year.
Ambassador of “DIY skate”
Today, “GreenRock” is the French ambassador of “DIY Skate”, a movement that encourages the construction of handmade skateparks. Born in the early 80s in the United States, “DIY Skate” flourishes with the rise of street skateboarding due to the lack of skateparks in urban areas.
Some skaters began building their own spots, an idea that quickly spread worldwide. Inheriting from the punk culture of the late 80s, the movement becomes almost a philosophy, advocating creative freedom and autonomy within the skate community.
In Roquevaire, “Greenrock” is no exception: the site aims to maintain the spirit of freedom and sharing of the early DIY spots. In 2027, the skatepark will even be featured in an exhibition organized by the Mucem on skateboarding. “It’s very rewarding to be featured at the Mucem. In a way, our work is immortalized,” savors the president. A major recognition for a movement still underdeveloped in France.
