Italian Kimi Antonelli won the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, May 3, the fourth race of the season, after the forced break and cancellations of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia GPs due to the Middle East war. With a third consecutive victory, the young Mercedes driver continues to impress this season. At 19, the youngest leader in the history of the drivers’ standings, he beat the McLarens of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri at the Miami International Autodrome circuit.
Kimi Antonelli has confirmed his strong start to the season. He broke the poleman curse in Florida, who never won on this circuit. “The road is still long, we work hard and without the team, I wouldn’t be here. I will go back to work for what’s next,” he reacted to the organizers’ microphone. However, the end of the race played tricks on Monegasque Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari driver, long in 3rd position, spun 360 in the last lap and could only hold onto 6th place, behind George Russell (Mercedes) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull). The drivers were ultimately spared from the rain, which did not disrupt the outcome of the race. It had been exceptionally moved up by three hours due to the risk of storms in Florida.
The race was also marked by Isack Hadjar’s off-track excursion, who made a great comeback from last position, and Pierre Gasly’s roll after a collision with Liam Lawson. “It has never happened to me like this in an F1 car. It was quite impressive,” reacted the Alpine driver. Esteban Ocon (Haas) is the only Frenchman to finish the race, ending in 13th place.
