Major Change for Badminton: Three Sets of 15 Points
It’s a major change for badminton. 21 years after switching to three sets of 21 points, the World Federation (BWF) officially announced on Saturday the switch to three sets… of 15 points, starting January 4, 2027.
“This system should offer more excitement and competitiveness in the sport, improve scheduling, make match durations more consistent, and has the potential to benefit the well-being of players and their recovery,” explained Thai Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, president of the organization, in a statement.
A Change That May Raise Concerns
This decision follows a logic of “building a sport that resonates with the new generation,” while continuing to invest “in the future of players.”
This change involves some adjustments as well. The technical timeout will arrive earlier in a game (when a player reaches 8 points, instead of 11). In case of a tie at 14-14, the rule of two-point lead to win the set still applies. However, if the score reaches 20-20 (as opposed to 29-29 previously), a decisive point will be played.
“We know that this change may raise concerns, especially in a sport with such strong traditions. But this decision does not alter the fundamental nature of badminton. The technique, tactics, physical and mental demands, and the suspense of this sport remain intact,” said Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, who believes that “this change strengthens the sport […] by continuing to inspire and connect with fans worldwide.”
