The Marathon des Sables announced a sad news on Tuesday. In a statement published on social media, the organization reported the death of a participant in the 40th edition of the MDS Legendary, named Gregory, without providing further details. “Victim of a serious illness at the bivouac on the morning of April 8,” he was “immediately taken care of and evacuated by helicopter to the hospital,” before passing away a few days later. “This event deeply affects the entire Marathon des Sables community, as well as all those who have shared this adventure,” wrote the organization, which also extends “its sincerest condolences to Gregory’s family and loved ones.” The officials specified that they had met with the family, who wished to convey “their sincere thanks to all the people present that day for their help and support, as well as to the medical teams and volunteers mobilized.”
The statement noted that the circumstances of Gregory’s death did not appear to be related to the sporting event, as he had met all the medical requirements to participate and had not sought medical assistance since the beginning of the race. The 40th edition of the famous ultra-trail in the Moroccan desert concluded on Saturday, with Savoyard Ludovic Pommeret finishing in a very impressive second place in his first participation.
