« L’image de l’Indien dans le western américain » is a conference presented by Hakim Fdaouch. It will be held on Thursday, May 7th at 6:30 pm at the Castle of the Bishops of Monistrol-sur-Loire.

Since the 1930s, the Native American has always been portrayed negatively in Western films produced by Hollywood studios. In a revisionist approach, motivated by the political context of the Great Depression and a desire to unite the American people rather than confront them with the genocide on which their nation was founded, the Native American has always been seen as a threat perched on a hill in Monument Valley. An individual ready to attack a stagecoach, a bloodthirsty and cruel warrior, slowing down the progress of the frontier and the conquest of the west. However, his image will evolve over time.

From “The Searchers” with its evil Indians, to “Broken Arrow” which marks the beginning of pro-Indian Westerns, to “Little Big Man” and its dissenting view of colonization, this conference aims to show the progressive evolution of an icon of a foundational genre of American cinema.

Hakim Fdaouch is a speaker, host of the Radio Days program dedicated to heritage cinema, and a short film director.
