Since their meeting at university, Kate Middleton and Prince William have (almost) never been apart. From becoming the most publicized royal love story of the 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s, who could have known what was to come?

It all began in 2001 with an official announcement from St James’s Palace: “Prince William will be attending St Andrews University next semester.” While royal family members historically study at Oxford or Cambridge, William broke tradition by choosing the intimacy of Scotland, shielded from the overexposure he had faced since his mother’s death, Lady Diana. His choice led to a surge in female applicants to St Andrews, including a certain Kate Middleton, who had initially applied to the University of Edinburgh.

Fast forward to 2002 when William and Kate, both studying art history, find each other at St Andrews. William, 19 at the time, with limited experience with girls officially, while Kate, a shy young woman who had her first kiss at 14, wanted to remain pure for the man of her dreams. Their connection strengthened during a charitable fashion show where William was mesmerized by Kate’s presence.

The love story turned official in 2004 when the couple was seen skiing together in Switzerland. Subsequently, William nicknamed Kate “Babykins” and himself “Big Willies.” Despite challenges and public scrutiny, their relationship persevered, culminating in their grand wedding at Westminster Abbey in 2011.

Over the years, the couple faced ups and downs, including a brief split in 2007 and the birth of their three children. In a surprising turn of events in 2024, Kate announced her battle with cancer, which brought her even closer to the public as a relatable figure.

Through it all, William and Kate have emerged as impeccable representatives of the British monarchy, weathering storms and personal trials while maintaining their royal duties and family life.
