Kneecap with Fenian: Music speaks louder than words

Irish musical icon, Kneecap, has emerged as a prominent figure in the vibrant and politically engaged Irish music scene, particularly in support of Palestine. Kneecap has gained international recognition with their Gaelic Irish hip-hop. Drawing on a heritage shaped by the Troubles, outspoken activism, and rave culture, the trio of Mo Chara, Mógla Bap, and DJ Próva presents an exhilarating album. In a recent interview, they shared insights into their journey and music.

Two years after their debut album, “Fine Art,” and a year after the release of the documentary-style film of the same name, Kneecap returns with “Fenian,” their second album available on May 1st. Alongside their artistic rise, the trio has made headlines in the UK and even in France for their legal issues and political interventions supporting Palestine. Despite controversy, the trio continues to showcase solidarity and Irish patriotism through their music.

Grown in Northern Ireland during the changing times of the late 1990s and early 2000s, Kneecap reflects on the era marked by the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. Memories of hope and transformation play a significant role in their artistry and perspectives.

Reflecting on their musical beginnings in 2017, Kneecap recalls a period of lightheartedness and DIY ethos, never anticipating their current popularity. Working with producer Dan Carey for the first time brought new depth to their artistic process and resulted in a more mature and refined second album.

Despite the controversies and political undertones in their music, Kneecap describes themselves primarily as a music group. With a focus on their Gaelic Irish language, they express intentions to continue singing in their native tongue, reflecting both their cultural heritage and personal connections.
