At the Montmartre Museum, the strangers from the Bateau-Lavoir

The charming museum located at the top of the Butte, where Valadon and Utrillo lived, dedicates a retrospective to Otto van Rees (1884-1957) and his wife Adya (1876-1959). This Dutch couple of painters (she was also a embroiderer) were more than just companions of the cubist avant-garde. They lived at the Bateau-Lavoir at the time of the creation of “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon,” the lighthouse of the new painting, now a masterpiece at the MoMA in New York. They worked alongside the most mythical Picasso, the one of bohemia. Braque was among their close friends, too.

[Context: The text discusses the current retrospective at the Montmartre Museum focusing on Otto van Rees and his wife Adya. It also mentions their association with prominent artists like Picasso.]
