The United Nations General Assembly reaffirms its support for Ukraine, the United States abstains

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on Tuesday reaffirming its support for Kiev and its territorial integrity, despite American objections. The text, adopted by 107 votes for, 12 against, and 51 abstentions (including the United States), reaffirms “firm attachment to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.”

It also once again calls for an “immediate, complete, and unconditional ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine, “a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in accordance with international law“, and the complete exchange of prisoners of war.

The Americans, whose request to vote separately on paragraphs referring to Ukraine’s territorial integrity and international law was rejected, abstained. “The United States obviously welcomes the call for an immediate ceasefire” but “this resolution also includes formulations that may detract from ongoing negotiations rather than support all diplomatic paths that could pave the way for lasting peace,” justified Deputy US Ambassador Tammy Bruce.

Leaders of the G7 countries (Germany, Canada, United States, France, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom), including Donald Trump, affirmed their “unwavering support for Ukraine in defense of its territorial integrity and its right to exist” on Tuesday.

One year ago, one month after Donald Trump returned to the White House, the United States voted against a resolution calling for “a just peace“, adopted by the UN General Assembly. Subsequently, they had passed a resolution in the Security Council, with Russian support, calling for a swift peace but without mentioning Ukraine’s territorial integrity, much to the dismay of Kiev’s European allies.
