Farah, a 21-year-old Moroccan woman, was deported from the United States to Cameroon in January. In Cameroon, same-sex relationships are considered a crime punishable by five years in prison.

Farah is now back in her home country after fleeing Morocco and seeking asylum in the United States. She now lives in fear of being found by her family members, as reported by Associated Press.

Since the beginning of Donald Trump’s second term in January 2025, Farah is one of the people who have been deported to a third country. Despite the risk of imprisonment for being homosexual in both Cameroon and Morocco, Farah chose to return to Morocco.

Before leaving her country, Farah was abused by her family and her partner’s family. When her family found her in a city where she sought refuge, they attempted to kill her. Farah and her partner then decided to leave the country and travel through Brazil to the United States, where friends reside.

The Cameroon government, along with other African countries like South Sudan, Rwanda, Uganda, Eswatini, Ghana, and Equatorial Guinea, have accepted deportees from the United States under agreements. Some of these countries received millions of dollars in return, according to documents from the State Department.

The Trump administration spent at least $40 million to deport around 300 migrants to countries other than their own, as reported by Democratic members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee earlier this month.
