This week, Réforme sheds light on a war that is rarely talked about: the one ravaging South Sudan. Born in 2011, this young state, the most recent member of the UN, has been almost constantly embroiled in a devastating conflict since its creation, marked by ethnic and political tensions between the president and vice president.

Sudan’s toll is staggering: around 400,000 dead and millions displaced. On the ground, the Réforme reporter visited a refugee camp where people try to escape war, often unsuccessfully escaping hunger. International aid remains insufficient, while humanitarian needs remain enormous.

In the midst of the conflict, churches are committed to peace in South Sudan. In the midst of violence and distress, Réforme also gives a voice of hope: that of a pastor involved in the Council of Churches of South Sudan. Through ecumenical dialogue, he seeks to advance peace in a deeply wounded country.

Another topic in the headlines is the United States, where Donald Trump wanted to open the festivities for the 250th anniversary of American independence with a day dedicated to “reconsecrating America to God.” Organized on the National Mall in Washington, the event sparked numerous reactions in a country where the separation of church and state remains a founding principle.

Find these topics, as well as the usual sections of the weekly publication, in Réforme and on reforme.net.
