The United States has detained Adys Lastres Morera, the sister of the executive president of GAESA, a large conglomerate of businesses run by the military, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday.
Mrs. Morera, who entered the United States as a legal permanent resident in 2023, is now being held by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) pending deportation proceedings, according to a separate ICE statement.
The presence of Mrs. Morera poses a threat to the United States and undermines American foreign policy interests, the statement said.
Cuban leaders rarely publicly discuss GAESA, an acronym for Grupo de Administración Empresarial, or “group for business administration.”
They have long argued that this discretion is necessary to deal with the American commercial and financial blockade that significantly complicates the country’s commercial relations with the outside world.
Reuters was unable to immediately reach Morera’s representatives for comment.
