Iran threatens to open new fronts if attacked by US

“If the enemy makes the mistake of falling into the Zionists’ trap and committing a new aggression against our beloved Iran, we will open new fronts against them,” declared Iranian army spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia on Tuesday, May 19.

The Iranian army warned on Tuesday, May 19 in a statement that if the United States resumes its attacks on Iran, which have been halted since a ceasefire took effect on April 8, they will “open new fronts.”

President Donald Trump had announced on Monday, just in time, that a new attack on Iran, scheduled for Tuesday, had been canceled. He claimed that there were “very good chances” of reaching an agreement with Tehran.

Tehran seeks to block frozen Iranian assets abroad

Trump had never mentioned this attack plan before Monday and explained in a post on his Truth Social platform that he had abandoned a new offensive at the request of leaders from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates who believe an agreement is possible.

Negotiations have been ongoing since the ceasefire began on April 8 after nearly 40 days of strikes, but both sides remain far apart, especially on the nuclear aspect. Only one round of discussions between American and Iranian representatives took place on April 11 in Islamabad, which ended in failure.

Iran warned against any new “strategic and calculated mistake”

Trump assured that the US was ready to launch a “total and large-scale attack on Iran at any time if an acceptable agreement was not reached with Tehran.” Iranian Armed Forces Commander Ali Abdollahi cautioned against any new “strategic and calculated mistake” by the US and its allies.

The deal in question must ensure that Iran does not obtain nuclear weapons, Trump wrote. Iranian media had already criticized the “excessive conditions” imposed by the US in their latest offer.

According to the Fars agency, Washington demands that Iran only maintain one active nuclear site and transfer its stock of highly enriched uranium to the United States. Washington also refused to unlock “even 25%” of the assets or compensate Iran for the damages suffered during the war.
