Washington accuses Cuba of discussing drone attacks against the United States

Cuba has acquired more than 300 military drones and recently considered scenarios to use them against the US Guantanamo Bay base, or even against US territory, as reported on Sunday, May 17 by Axios, based on classified information.

This publication comes amid high tension between the two countries, with Cuban officials accusing Washington of laying the political groundwork for an intervention against the island.

“When we think about this type of technology so close to us, it’s worrying,” emphasized a senior US official speaking anonymously to Axios about “an increasing threat.”

Donald Trump believes Cuba is “a threat”

He indicated that Cuba had acquired attack drones from Russia and Iran since 2023, and was now seeking to obtain more.

The relationship between the two ideological enemies has been particularly strained for months. Donald Trump considers the communist island, located 150 kilometers off the coast of Florida, as an “extraordinary threat” to US national security.

The US president has threatened several times to “take control” of Cuba, suggesting sending an aircraft carrier there.

A blockade with heavy consequences

In addition to the US embargo in place since 1962, Washington – which does not hide its desire to see a regime change in Havana – has imposed a oil blockade on the island since January, only allowing the arrival of one Russian oil tanker.

The US also announced in early May a tightening of sanctions against Cuba.

In this context, the CIA director, John Ratcliffe, traveled to Havana on Thursday for an exceptional meeting with senior Cuban officials, as the two countries are in difficult negotiations.

The president of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel, stated in mid-April that his country was “ready” to face a US military aggression.

The island’s civil defense has recently circulated a “family guide” for protection in the event of a military aggression, according to several provincial official sites.
