Less than a year after announcing his battle against Charcot disease, Eric Dane has passed away. The American actor died on February 19, 2026, at the age of 53. He leaves behind two young daughters, Billie Beatrice, born on March 3, 2010, and Georgia Geraldine, born on December 28, 2011, from his relationship with his wife Rebecca Gayheart. In a statement from his family, it was said: “He spent his final days surrounded by close friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his universe.”

His battle against the disease

In April 2025, Eric Dane went public with his diagnosis. Afflicted with Charcot disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), an incurable neurodegenerative disease, he expressed gratitude for his loving family and colleagues as he faced this new challenge. He even expressed eagerness to return to work on the set of “Euphoria” the following week. However, things quickly deteriorated as he announced in June that he had lost the use of his right arm. A few months later, he was photographed in a wheelchair, demonstrating the rapid progression of the disease.

The unwavering support of Rebecca Gayheart

Throughout the ordeal, Eric Dane could rely on the support of his wife, Rebecca Gayheart. The couple, married since 2004, weathered a rough patch in 2018 when they initially announced their separation before ultimately reversing that decision. Rebecca Gayheart stood by the father of her two daughters throughout his illness, even filling in for nurses during shifts.

A multifaceted career

Born in 1972 in San Francisco, Eric Dane began his career with guest appearances in series like “Saved by the Bell” and “Married… with Children.” He had a recurring role in the series “Charmed” between 2003 and 2004, but it was his character Mark Sloan in “Grey’s Anatomy” that brought international success. His career then expanded to the cinema, with roles in films such as “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006), “Marley & Me” (2008), and “Valentine’s Day” (2010). On television, he appeared in the series “The Last Ship” (2014) and “Euphoria” (2019) where he played Cal Jacobs.

A life marked by hardships

Throughout his life, Eric Dane faced several personal storms. In 2008, he was diagnosed with skin cancer, which he quickly recovered from. However, three years later, he entered rehab to overcome a dependence on medication.

These trials did not deter him from continuing his career. In October 2025, he portrayed a firefighter with Charcot disease in the second season of the series “Brilliant Minds.” The show’s creator, Michael Grassi, revealed behind-the-scenes details of this appearance, describing how Dane received a ten-minute ovation after filming a poignant scene. It was a poignant final moment in front of the cameras, almost like a farewell.
