Guy Lauret, mayor of Vendargues, wrote to residents to explain the new directions voted in favor of urban reinvestment.

An unfair decision for the Vendargue elected officials

During the Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole council meeting on April 28, the increase in the metropolitan share of the property tax on buildings, from 0.167% to 5.8%, aroused strong opposition from several elected officials, including the mayor of Vendargues and Catherine Itier, municipal and metropolitan councilor.

Presented as necessary to finance the skill “public space”, this measurement “represents an increase of €45 million”, he specifies in his letter. A decision deemed profoundly unfair by elected officials in Vendargues, who denounce a burden weighing essentially on “owners, businesses, traders, craftsmen, farmers”, even though “everyone uses the public domain”.

In an already tense economic context, “persistent inflation, weak growth, rising interest rates, rising energy costs”the mayor defended another vision: that of a Metropolis capable of sharing the budgetary effort between internal economies and moderate taxation. “Recourse to taxes must remain as moderate as possible”.

With 24 other colleagues, the representatives of Vendargues therefore voted against this increase, while supporting the 2026 budget of the Metropolis. A budget that they salute for its strong commitments “in terms of the fight against floods, mobility, energy transition, employment and preservation of traditions”.

This vote marks a clear line. That of a “intercommunal solidarity”, which should not excessively increase the tax burden on taxpayers.

True to its history “a pioneer municipality in intercommunality since 1965”, the councilor wishes to recall the participation of Vendargues in the collective development of the territory, while relaying the “fiscally fed up” expressed by taxpayers, in the name of the defense of “purchasing power” local.
