The NBA franchise Memphis Grizzlies announced on Tuesday the death of their forward Brandon Clarke, at the age of 29.

This was a sudden news in the NBA. The Memphis Grizzlies franchise announced on Tuesday evening the death of their Canadian forward Brandon Clarke, at the age of 29. In a statement, the Grizzlies expressed being “deeply saddened by the tragic loss” of Clarke. His team added, “Brandon was an exceptional teammate and an even more remarkable person, whose influence on the club and the entire Memphis community will be remembered”.

Clarke was selected in the first round of the NBA draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019 and was later traded to Memphis two weeks later, where he played his entire seven-year career in the major league.

Rain of tributes in the NBA

Injured calf this season, Brandon Clarke – 4th in the rookie of the year ranking in 2019 – was only able to play two games with the Grizzlies in December 2025.

Although no official information has been released regarding the circumstances of his death, several media outlets including TMZ suggest a possible overdose, as drug paraphernalia was reportedly found at his home.

Regardless, the basketball community quickly reacted to the news by paying tribute. “We are devastated to learn of Brandon Clarke’s passing,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “As one of the longest-serving members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played with immense passion and tenacity. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Brandon’s family, friends, and the Grizzlies organization.”
