Latest Eurobarometer Shows 74% of Europeans Have a Negative Opinion of the United States

As Europe approaches Europe Day on Saturday, May 9, the European Commission released its latest Eurobarometer on Friday, May 8. The survey reveals that nearly three quarters of Europeans believe their country has benefited from EU membership, with Europe seen as a source of stability in a challenging global context. However, it also highlights a notably negative view of the United States among Europeans.

According to the summary of the barometer, the negative opinion of EU citizens towards the United States has significantly increased. This figure stands at 74% (up by 14 points), surpassing the 24% of respondents with a positive view of the country led by Donald Trump. Additionally, 61% of Europeans have a negative opinion of China, and 83% have a negative opinion of Russia.

Moreover, the concerns of Europeans are increasingly influenced by global events, as the conflict in the Middle East is now the main concern (25%) of residents, followed by international affairs (23%) and the war between Russia and Ukraine (20%). Nationally (36%) and personally (52%), the cost of living remains the primary concern for Europeans.
