50 pages of detailed data to enumerate the errors committed by Antonio Aguto Jr. during his mission in Ukraine. The Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Defense published a damning report on a former U.S. Army general last weekend.

Antonio Aguto Jr. led the Security Assistance Group – Ukraine (SAG-U) until August 2024, responsible for overseeing U.S. military support to Kiev. He had received three complaints about his management before leaving his post.

A “progressive decline”

He is specifically accused of violating the current policy on classified documents. In March 2024, the former general allegedly entrusted “top secret” maps to unauthorized personnel during a trip to Germany.

During the same trip, these valuable documents were lost after being “improperly stored” in an “unsafe location,” before being found the next day. “Brigadier General Aguto took responsibility for this incident,” the report cited by the Kyiv Independent newspaper states.

On May 14, 2024, two months later, Antonio Aguto Jr. showed signs of a “progressive decline” during a meeting with the then Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink.

This general health condition was subsequently attributed to a cerebral concussion suffered after a series of falls during an evening where he consumed a large amount of alcohol. According to the report, during his dinner on May 13, 2024, the former general drank up to 1 liter of “chacha,” a Georgian brandy.

Antonio Aguto Jr. eventually left the command of SAG-U in August 2024. The report does not indicate whether he was fired or chose to leave his position. “Appropriate measures” had been recommended to the Secretary of the Army at the time.
