In a series of interviews available in podcast form on France Musique, Laurent Garnier revisits his journey from his beginnings at the Haçienda to his status as a pioneer of French techno. At 60 years old, the DJ and producer tells his story with the same curiosity that has guided his entire career.

If one had to identify a French figure who tirelessly worked to make techno understandable, loved, and accessible to the widest audience, the name Laurent Garnier would almost naturally come to mind. A DJ, producer, composer of essential albums in the history of French electronic music, as well as a tireless radio promoter, he has been defending an open, curious, and profoundly humanistic vision of music for decades.

After having previously worked on FG or Radio Nova, he can now be heard every month on FIP. But it is on France Musique that we find him, not as a host, but as a guest on the “Grands Entretiens” with Laurent Vilanova.

An interview divided into five episodes of around 25 minutes available in podcast form, where he goes into detail about his journey. He discusses his beginnings as a pirate radio host, the 80s, his early DJ experiences in Manchester at the iconic Haçienda, during his military service, up to unforgettable moments like his performance at the Salle Pleyel in 2010. Laurent Garnier shares numerous memories, pivotal encounters in a remarkably consistent career.

The son of a carnival worker and a hairdresser, he could have followed a very different path. However, from a young age, music became the driving force in his life. After his military service, he entered the doors of London clubs, slowly building a career that would lead him to become one of the most respected names in the global electronic music scene.

At 60 years old, Laurent Garnier continues to approach music with the same curiosity as in his early days. Always passionate, he maintains a collection of over 55,000 vinyl records.

His latest album, “33 Tours Et Puis S’en Vont,” was released in May 2023.
