Community Police Officers Go Beyond Law Enforcement

Municipal police officers do not just carry out the necessary tasks to maintain order, safety, and public health. Thanks to their daily presence in the field, they also play an essential role with young people, especially in terms of prevention.

Engaging with Youth

Engaged in a proximity approach, the municipal police participated in Youth Day organized by the social and cultural center. On this occasion, they actively took part in the event by offering rugby and football initiations. These activities, held in the friendly atmosphere of the Yves-Comte sports complex, fostered exchanges with the youth.

Close to eighty participants from social centers in Salindres, Nîmes, Toulouse, Redessan, Saint-Gilles, and Montpellier gathered for this day focused on sharing.

According to Christian Fabrègue, deputy for public safety: “Beyond sports, this day allowed for significant prevention action, particularly by raising awareness among young people about the dangers of nitrous oxide, a concerning issue in our area. It’s important to remind minors that they have rights, but also responsibilities, and they may be exposed to risks such as extortion or drugs. Childhood and adolescence are sensitive periods marked by specific behaviors. Municipal police officers must intervene with discernment, respect, and authority, avoiding spectacular arrests and considering the age and rights of young people.”

This day perfectly illustrates the essential role of municipal police officers, Yohan Bastien and Frédéric Lagleyse: “Being present, listening, and engaged with the youth of Salindres. Through these proximity actions, they fully contribute to prevention and community living. Because by preventing and protecting our young people, we are preparing their future.”
