In just a few years, Léo Vermot-Desroches has established himself as one of the most promising tenors in the new French operatic scene. Currently starring in “Lucie de Lammermoor” at the Opéra Comique, alongside Sabine Devieilhe and Étienne Dupuis, he portrays Edgar Ravenswood, the tragic lover of Lucie. He will make his debut at the Opéra de Paris next season, playing the role of Werther, another archetype of the romantic hero.

Despite this spectacular rise, the 34-year-old singer remains focused on his work: “I try not to think too much about the critics. I know I have to sing every other day, I prepare for it, but I don’t think about everything else,” he explains. “It was only on the night of the premiere that I felt the pressure because it’s a highly anticipated show, but I try to detach myself from it,” he adds. “Now, I trust the audience more than the critics. I have a few trusted people who come see me, I listen to them, and I shield myself from criticism.”

In a unique path to opera, Léo Vermot-Desroches didn’t come from a musical background but discovered this world later in life thanks to his music teacher. The singer recalls, “He let me access the room, there was a piano, and that’s where I started tinkering with my first notes.” It wasn’t until high school and university that he realized his passion for singing.

He went on to join the CNSM de Paris and then the Académie Jaroussky. During his training, Léo Vermot-Desroches experimented with different vocal ranges. He shares, “I entered as a bass, found it quite easy, so I ventured into high notes. Gradually, through work, I climbed the ranks. I became a baritone, then a tenor. I even tried a countertenor voice for a while, but then went back.”

“What immediately attracted me to the opera were the ensembles. I wasn’t too fond of the arias; I skipped them when listening to opera. What interested me was hearing voices singing together in harmony,” explains Léo Vermot-Desroches. “I hadn’t done any theater before college either, but it’s something that also fascinates me. I regret now not having done more of it early on. I’m learning a bit on the job with directors, but the level of excellence I have with my voice, I want to have it as an actor too.”
