Several days after an AI-generated version of Val Kilmer was presented to a cinema audience, a year after his death, a decision has been made regarding this. The “Top Gun” and “The Doors” star appeared rejuvenated in the trailer for the action film “As Deep as the Grave,” where he can be heard telling another character: “Don’t be afraid of the dead, and don’t be afraid of me.” The project was realized with the approval of Val Kilmer’s family, who granted access to video archives used to recreate the actor at different stages of his life.
The use of artificial intelligence remains a sensitive issue in Hollywood. It was a central point in the strikes of 2023 that paralyzed the American film industry, with actors and screenwriters warning that without regulation, this technology could threaten the very existence of their professions.
New modalities for international film
Among other changes to the Academy’s regulations is a modification in the nomination process for films in the category of Best International Film. Up until this year, only a film selected by an official national body could be submitted, creating difficulties for critical films made in authoritarian states. For example, this led to the Cannes Palme d’Or winner “A Simple Event,” by Iranian dissident Jafar Panahi, representing France at the Oscars, as it was ignored by the Islamic Republic.
