The physical activity space adapted to the needs of the citizens of Brest to meet local needs, the Physical Activity Space (APA) of the League against Cancer is now established as an essential asset in the area. Open for a year, this project is co-financed by the Odysséa association to the tune of 58,480 euros. “It was important to me to fund this space; the tangible signs of the financial assistance we provide are significant,” said Gwenaël Vigot, President of the Odysséa association. Camille Le Roux, head of marketing at the League, highlights the coherence and shared values that unite the League against Cancer and the Odysséa association.
A valuable asset in the life journey and daily life Camille Bourlès, head of support at the League, explains that this structure allows for regular and secure movement to prevent or limit certain consequences, “while reducing the side effects of treatments.” The practice helps to regain self-confidence, mobilize personal resources, and reconnect socially, while reducing the risk of recurrence and facilitating, in some cases, the return to professional activity. This space mainly hosts adapted physical activity sessions, but also offers other workshops for the overall support of patients and their caregivers, such as qi-gong, flamenco, floral art, or singing.
80 people every week After a year of operation in Brest, the assessment is particularly positive: the space now welcomes 80 people every week. A fourth time slot has been created to meet the growing demand from local users. The organization prioritizes access for as many people as possible: while there are no refusals of registration, some requests are put on hold. Thanks to the support of numerous donors, access to activities is free once a week for a year. The two-hour sessions take place in the premises of the League against Cancer and are supervised by specialized teachers in adapted physical activity, with groups of eight to ten people. It should be noted that the space closes its doors every August.
