War in Ukraine: Zelensky accuses Russia of nuclear terrorism 40 years after Chernobyl

Conflict: “The world must not allow this nuclear terrorism to continue,” said Zelensky referring to the war triggered by Russia

New Russian bombings in Ukraine on Sunday killed at least three people after particularly intense strikes the day before. President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of “nuclear terrorism” on the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident. “The world must not allow this nuclear terrorism to continue, and the best way to end it is to compel Russia to stop its irresponsible attacks,” Zelensky declared, referring to the war triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Worst civilian nuclear disaster

Russia is “once again leading the world to the brink of a man-made catastrophe,” he added, noting that Russian drones regularly fly over Chernobyl and that one of them collided with its containment shell last year. As Ukraine commemorates the 40th anniversary of the worst civilian nuclear disaster in history, at Chernobyl, authorities announced early morning Russian strikes targeting infrastructure in the regions of Chernihiv (north) and Odessa (south), with no immediate reported casualties.
