STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl, developed by GSC Game World and released in 2024, faced a long development process. Originally slated for an earlier release, the game was delayed indefinitely due to funding issues and numerous staff changes within the studio. In 2018, GSC Game World unveiled a first teaser for STALKER 2, and after several delays, including the invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022 which also impacted development, the game finally launched on November 20, 2024.

As you may know, STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl will be receiving a new DLC this summer, Cost of Hope, announced during the Xbox Partner Preview last month. Recently, GSC Game Studio also released an update, Sealed Truth, which, in addition to bug fixes, ties into the upcoming expansion by introducing a new series of quests centered around the mysterious X-18 laboratory. At the 2026 BAFTA Games Awards (results can be found here), Insider Gaming interviewed Ievgen Grygorovych, CEO of GSC Game World and co-director of STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl. He commented on the game’s nomination in the “Beyond Entertainment” category with a rather serious response:

“In our region of the world, this game is closely linked to our war. As a team, we are fully involved in everything that is happening. For us, this project transcends mere entertainment. It is an essential way to send a message to the entire world.”

Meanwhile, GSC Game World’s creative director, Maria Grygorovych, discussed the impact of STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl on Ukrainian culture. Her comments are as follows:

“We have already achieved our goal, as one of the most important was to give players the opportunity to appreciate Ukrainian culture.”

We sincerely believe that Ukrainian culture deserves to be loved. When we see people from around the world listening to Ukrainian music or starting to take an interest in the language, literature, or philosophy of the game, it already proves that we have accomplished something important, at least for us and to achieve our artistic goals.

The next DLC for STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl, titled Cost of Hope, will be released this summer on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. The exact release date is still unknown.
