DÉCRYPTAGE – The revision of the military programming law comes in a context of budget deterioration due to the war in the Middle East.
Like an early autumn preview before the chestnut trees wither. On Tuesday, lawmakers dove back into budget discussions by starting the examination in committee of the revision of the military programming law (LPM). An additional 36 billion euros for the armed forces until 2030 in a context of deterioration in the geopolitical situation and public finances. The discussion comes at a time when the government has announced plans to find 6 billion euros in savings this year to offset the economic effects of the war in the Middle East (stagnating growth, in particular). A conflict that, moreover, costs “about 200 million euros per month” to France due to the mobilization of its military (including the deployment of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle) to prepare for any eventuality, according to a government source.
In the maneuver to explain the LPM, the Minister of the Armed Forces, Catherine Vautrin, wants to believe that the public opinion is “aware.”
