« This is moral support, but it is important, » explains Amnesty International secretary Alain Bihel. However, like other members of the NGO, he knows how important this support can be. This was reminded by Ali Mohammadi, the son of Nargis, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2023, during his visit to Vire in May 2025. Since that date, the city has chosen to make Nargis Mohammadi an honorary citizen of the city.

« Her situation is critical »

As a reminder, the Iranian activist who has been fighting for human rights in her country for years, is imprisoned. Very ill, the regime of the mullahs denies her all necessary care. « Her situation is critical, » adds Alain Bihel.

The mobilization on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 (Nargis’ birthday) aimed to sign a giant postcard. About a hundred people from Vire, including the mayor, Pascal Martin, added their signatures and a message of support. Everything will be sent to her family and to the Nargis Mohammadi Foundation.

Already in February, the group had prepared a letter, which was sent directly to the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in France, to demand her release and respect for human rights. Over 150 signatures were collected.

Monthly meetings open to everyone

Throughout the year, Amnesty International mobilizes in the capital of Bocage to more broadly defend human rights or inform about the condition of political prisoners worldwide. The group meets every month at the town hall of Vaudry and has about fifteen members. Before the summer, they will be out again to support the new cause supported by Amnesty France, which focuses on defending foreign workers. The year will end with the group’s presence in Toulouse, at the national general assembly. Another opportunity for the people of Vire to know what is happening in Vire Normandie.

It is always possible to attend monthly meetings. The next one will take place on Monday, May 11, at 6 pm at the town hall of Vaudry. For more information: Alain Bihel at 06 08 93 02 06.
