Thursday, April 16, Donald Trump announced a ten-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. According to the American leader, a meeting between the Israeli Prime Minister and the Lebanese president could take place within four to five days.

Just moments ago, peace seems to have finally returned. Thursday, April 16, the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon came into effect after 47 days of conflict. A truce negotiated by Donald Trump, who called on both Lebanese and Israeli leaders. The agreement is set to last ten days, during which the American president aims to organize a meeting to negotiate a lasting peace. “We will meet with Benyamin Netanyahu, as you know, and the president of Lebanon. I had a very good exchange with each of them, and they will therefore implement a ceasefire,” he declared.

The Israeli Prime Minister hailed it as a historic step, while confirming that his army would remain stationed in a buffer zone south of Lebanon. “It’s a 10 km wide security strip. A much stronger, more concentrated and continuous position. A much stronger position than we had before. We remain in this zone, we do not leave it,” affirmed Benjamin Netanyahu.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun also welcomed the beginning of the truce and committed to preventing any Hezbollah attacks against Israel. The pro-Iranian militia, a key player in the conflict, was neither consulted nor invited to the negotiation table. For now, they have agreed to abide by the ceasefire, but strongly reject any discussions with Israel.

The ceasefire is warmly welcomed by many countries, but will it be the first step towards lasting peace? The day was marked by attacks from both sides. At least seven Lebanese were reportedly killed in an Israeli attack just hours before the US President’s announcements. In this context, some countries, including France, have expressed reservations. According to Donald Trump, the meeting between the Lebanese president and the Israeli Prime Minister could take place within four to five days.
