Iran has announced that the Strait of Hormuz is “completely open” and will remain so for the duration of its negotiated ceasefire with Washington, thanks to the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon that came into effect on Friday.
“As per the ceasefire in Lebanon, the passage of all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is declared to be completely open for the remaining duration of the ceasefire negotiated with Washington,” wrote Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in a post on X.
The ceasefire in Lebanon was one of Iran’s conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
After acknowledging the announcement on his social network Truth Social, President Donald Trump stated that the US naval blockade on Iranian ports would continue until negotiations with Tehran were completed. Washington imposed its blockade last Monday after Iran refused to abandon its nuclear ambitions during talks that failed in Islamabad.
Trump reassured that most contentious issues with Iran had already been negotiated and that the talks should conclude soon. There are five days remaining in the ceasefire, initially lasting two weeks, negotiated between the United States and Iran.
Oil prices dropped on the stock markets following the announcement of the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran.
