Andalusia has emerged as one of the main producers of blueberries and cranberries in Europe. It stands out for its hydroponic production solutions in pots or bags, which allow for very high levels of productivity. These growing environments require extremely precise management of irrigation and nutrition: any deviation in water quality or nutrient application can jeopardize the viability of the crop and the profitability of agricultural investment.
Farms operating in this context face a number of challenges: – The structural water scarcity in the region, which requires optimizing water use to maintain production capacity – Strict environmental regulations, especially in areas with high crop concentration, which require water use models and discharge control – The risk of pathogen presence in drainage water, hindering direct reuse and potentially affecting plant health and productivity
To address these challenges, AZUD implements drainage water treatment facilities based on consolidated filtration and disinfection technologies, which remove particles, solids, and various microorganisms, ensuring safe water for irrigation reuse. Thus, the recovered water can be incorporated into the irrigation system with all the guarantees of maintaining the health and productivity of blueberry cultivation.
Increased productivity and resource savings: The station has the capacity to treat up to 8 m³/h, sufficient to supply about 8 hectares of hydroponic blueberry cultivation. Reusing drainage water allows: – Increasing water availability and irrigation efficiency – Reducing fertilizer consumption by up to 30% – Water savings between 20% and 60% – Return on investment of less than a year based on current water and fertilizer costs
