According to the Viva Energy website, the refinery provides “more than 50%” of the fuel in the state of Victoria and “10% of the fuel in Australia.”

Australian emergency services struggled on Wednesday with a fire at one of the country’s two refineries, which supplies 10% of Australia’s fuel. Local firefighters responded to explosions and a fire at the Viva Oil refinery in Geelong, Victoria at 11:15 PM on Wednesday. The fire, involving “liquid fuels and gas,” has not yet been extinguished but is contained within the facility, according to Victoria’s firefighters.

No injuries have been reported, and Viva, the producer, assured that there would be “no immediate impact on fuel deliveries.”

The refinery, opened in 1954, can process up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day, producing gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum derivatives. It supplies “more than 50%” of Victoria’s fuel and “10% of Australia’s fuel,” according to Viva Energy’s website.

This fire comes a week after an agreement between Viva Energy and the Australian government to secure energy resources amid the Middle East conflict.
